Books

Cyclecraft by John Franklin

Review: I bought Cyclecraft over a year ago now as a result of multiple recommendations on the internet for it. I think it's probably the most often recommended cycling book out there, and if you get only one cycling book, this should be it.

Dooring - the "Door Zone"

Dooring is when a vehicle occupant opens his or her door in the path of a cyclist, who then either hits the door or is forced to swerve into other traffic. This is one of the biggest causes of serious injuries to cyclists in London.
The lesson is never to ride within the door zone.

Cyclists & Lorries

ROSPA has published a leaflet including advice for cyclists.

The Times published "Women cyclists 'risk death' by obeying traffic lights" in April 2008 highlighting the dangers documented in an unpublished TfL report

In more than half the fatal crashes, the lorry was turning left. Cyclists may be deceived by a lorry swinging out to the right to give itself room to make a left turn.
The study states that cycle "feeder" lanes, which allow cyclists to overtake vehicles along the nearside kerb to get to the front of queues, may "exacerbate the problem".
It also says that pedestrian guard railings may have contributed to three of the deaths because cyclists became trapped between the railings and the lorry, leaving them no escape route.
