Controlled Crossing in a Remote Part of Germany
This crossing is way out in the German countryside. It allows people on bikes to cross a very busy inter-urban highway that in the UK it would be classed as an A road. Most of the time the crossing sleeps to save power, but press the button and it wakes up, showing a green aspect to motor traffic. After about twenty seconds the light switches to amber, and then after a time commensurate with the high speed of the traffic here, it switches to red, and gives people on bikes a green light. When I used it there was no screeching rubber, and there were no articulated trucks jack-knifing in a desperate attempt to stop, so clearly the timing was entirely adequate, yet this crossing gives people on bikes a green light in less time than a typical British toucan crossing on a 30mph urban road. Note that it only has three light boxes, compared with the toucan crossing's four, one of the boxes being to improve visibility on this high speed road. Note also that the crossing is single stage.
