A proper cycle path is needed alongside the Bristol Road. There is plenty of space.
Although a shared use path has been built between Cob Lane and the Bristol Road (as part of the Merritts Brook Greenway), it is too narrow and twisty, and covered in loose gravel. As such it is all but useless as a cycle route.
Northfield high street is awful for cycling, being congested with slow-moving cars. On-street parking and difficult junctions add to the problems. Consequently it is best avoided. Unfortunately Maas Road was relatively recently made one-way, but without filtered permeability, so a quiet back road has become impassable. The route shown here requires a footpath to be made shared use.

This junction is notable for having no provision whatsoever for either cyclists or pedestrians. Inter-greens have been set to the legal minimum, and consequently the four arms to the junction are almost completely impossible to cross. But with no possibility of further increasing capacity for motorised traffic, the city is starting to see that a different strategy is required.
